The Quattro Release

Omarchy 4 aka Quattro is the biggest release since the project started. The entire desktop shell has been reimagined in Quickshell: the bar, launcher, menus, notifications, on-screen displays, control panels, lock screen, and polkit agent now all live inside a single long-running shell process with a plugin architecture. That means Waybar, Walker, Mako, SwayOSD, hyprlock, hypridle, swaybg, and polkit-gnome are all gone, replaced by one coherent, fully-themed, IPC-scriptable shell.

You can upgrade an existing Omarchy installation to Quattro by first Update > Omarchy, then Update > Omarchy to Quattro.

The Shell

Feature presentations

The theme switcher

Switching themes is now a more visual affair: a filterable carousel of live previews for every installed theme, opened with SUPER + SHIFT + CTRL + SPACE or via Style > Theme. You can see the new bar riding on top too.

The background switcher

Backgrounds get the same treatment on SUPER + CTRL + SPACE: flip through the current theme's backgrounds (plus any you've added) and see exactly what you're picking.

The launcher and the menu, together

Walker is gone, and SUPER + SPACE now opens the Omarchy menu itself: a native, filterable command palette living inside the shell. Once the menu could search its own nested entries, there was no reason to keep two palettes with two shortcuts around — so one box now finds your apps and every Omarchy command, with instant response, and it's extensible through a JSONC file if you want to add your own entries.

The app-launching side lost nothing in the merge: fuzzy and acronym matching, live icon indexing (freshly-installed apps show up with their icons immediately), and the ability to hide entries you never use. And when you want a launcher scoped to just your apps, SUPER + ALT + SPACE opens exactly that.

Control panels

The bar widgets now open real control panels. Audio (SUPER + CTRL + A) has output/input device switching and volume control:

A bar you can grab

There's no settings panel for the bar — you just grab it. Click and hold any empty stretch of bar and drag it toward a screen edge, and a ghost slab previews where it will dock. Drop it on the left or right and it turns into a vertical bar. Double-click empty bar space to toggle transparency. Widgets are added, removed, and rearranged with omarchy bar put and omarchy bar move, and third-party widgets install straight from git with omarchy plugin add.

Privilege escalation with context

Omarchy now uses pkexec/polkit for privileged operations, with a themed prompt that tells you exactly what command you're authorizing before you type your password.

Pick your coding agent

Omarchy no longer picks a coding agent for you — it asks. Choose Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Pi, Oh My Pi, Gemini, Grok, Copilot, or Crush under Setup > Defaults > Agent, and it's lazy-installed the first time you use it. From then on, SUPER + SHIFT + CTRL + A (or just a in any terminal) summons your agent in its own window, started in ~/Work so trust actually sticks. The model-usage bar widget keeps an eye on your Claude and Codex spend, and when a process crashes, one click on the toast briefs your agent on the core dump for a diagnosis.

The new default apps

Typora is out, and Omawrite is in. A dead-simple Markdown writing app that opens in a blink, autosaves as you type, and stays out of the way. Bound to SUPER + SHIFT + W. Free software.

It's joined by Omacut, a dead-simple video trimmer. Drop in a clip — like the screen recordings Omarchy takes — drag the handles on the filmstrip, and export the cut with ffmpeg doing the heavy lifting.

Omacalc completes the trio: a dead-simple calculator replacing GNOME Calculator, on SUPER + CTRL + Q.

And the defaults have been refreshed elsewhere too: Foot is the new default terminal, Tensaku replaces Satty for image annotation, Moonlight ships for Sunshine game/desktop streaming, and dua handles disk usage.

An install can now finish with no user at all. Deferred first-boot provisioning means you can set up a machine — for a family member, a colleague, a whole classroom — and hand it over untouched. On the first boot, the owner picks their keyboard, account, hostname, and timezone behind the same logo, progress bar, and rotating tips the ISO installer uses. On an encrypted disk, the LUKS volume is re-keyed from the throwaway install passphrase to the owner's password, all-or-nothing.

And when the machine comes back, Setup > Reset Computer hands it over again: the running root is swapped for a fresh clone of the @factory snapshot the ISO takes at install time, with machine identity, accounts, and fingerprint enrollments scrubbed — back to that untouched first-boot state.

Set reminders

Omarchy now has a built-in way to set simple reminders based on a countdown timer and with a message. You can do this via Super + Ctrl + R, seeing all the ones set via Super + Ctrl + Alt + R, and clearing all via Super + Ctrl + Shift + R. Everything also accessible via Trigger > Reminder. You can also use the cli with omarchy reminder 7 'Tea ready'.

Live weather in Waybar and notification

Live weather is now available in the Waybar when you have an internet connection. It uses the brilliant https://wttr.in as the backend, translates that to cute glyphs, and even considers day/night according to the local sunrise/sunset times.

There's also a more detailed notification you can trigger with Super + Ctrl + Alt + W:

Set Default Browser/Terminal/Editor

The holy trifecta of productivity defaults can now be set explicitly from the menu. Whether you like Foot or Ghostty, Chromium or Zen, Neovim or Helix, you can make Omarchy yours with very little effort. Install what you need from Install > Terminal or Install > Editor or Install > Browser, then set your default or change it via Setup > Defaults.

Browser installer

Omarchy can now install browsers with all the correct configs for Omarchy from the install menu. Browser-specific styling was moved into this flow, so changing browsers keeps Omarchy's theme integration intact.

You get live theming with Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Brave Origin.

Foot terminal option

Foot joins the terminal lineup with Omarchy defaults and theme support. Install it from Install > Terminal and theme it like the rest of the system. It's a remarkably light terminal, using about a fifth of the memory footprint of other already light options like Alacritty:

No-encryption installs

Omarchy strongly recommends using encryption with any installation going onto a machine that can be stolen or lost. But if you're running Omarchy on a headless server that's fully secured, it can make sense to turn off encryption to make it easier to do remote restarts. This can now be done on the disk confirmation stage during install by hitting Ctrl + c. An unencrypted install still asks for the password on boot, but as part of the normal login process. Not pre-boot.

ASCII image screensaver + about screen

You can now set the screensaver to an ASCII-rendered version of an image, giving the lock/idle experience another fun customization opportunity. You do this via Style > Screensaver > Set From Image.

The same can be done for the about screen via Style > Screensaver > Set From Image.

Zed with Omarchy themes

Zed will now get live theming when installed via Install > Editor > Zed.

Transcoding flow

You can now transcode images and videos directly from the Omarchy menu through Trigger > Transcode or Super + Ctrl + R. Super handy when you've taken a screenshot and you need it as a small jpg (instead of the default png) or you've recorded a short video and you want it as a gif.

Text extraction via tesseract OCR

Tesseract's open source OCR model makes it super quick to grab text out of any part of the screen. This is very helpful for grabbing addresses out of image footers or phone numbers embedded in website headlines. You can trigger it directly using Super + Ctrl + PrtScr or via the capture menu (Trigger > Capture or Super + Ctrl + C). The extracted text ends up on the clipboard ready for pasting.

Gaming galore!

Gaming on Omarchy just got a huge overhaul. First, the Steam installer is now fully automated (no more picking gpu libs!) and more compatible due to removal of the troublesome SDL_VIDEODRIVER env variable (reboot after upgrading to get rid of it!). Great way to play everything from Tetris Effects to ARC Raiders.

The RetroArch installer has gotten an even bigger upgrade by removing the AUR dependency (making it much faster to install) and preconfiguring the system, so all you have to do is put your bios and rom files in ~/Games, scan the directory, and you're ready to game using the beautiful CRT Royale shader for that perfect retro look.

You can now run Battle.net games via the Lutris launcher too! Remember Starcraft? Remember Diablo? WE REMEMBER!. It's a little janky to install, though. You just have to follow the instructions and be patient while it looks like nothing is happening, but it's working in the background.

There's also the Heroic Launcher, which allows you to run Epic Games titles, like OddSparks, without anti-cheat (so, sadly, no Fortnite or Rocket League!). It too is a little janky and slow to install games, but until Tim Sweeney comes to Linux, it's better than nothing!

The Xbox Cloud Gaming setup is "just" a web app for the service, but it works great, and it starts really quick. Good 1080p gaming if you already have Xbox Game Pass. Access to games like Fortnite and other titles you can't run natively anyway!

Finally, there's the Moonlight client for streaming games off a Windows PC running Sunshine. If you can hardwire both your Omarchy machine and the remote gaming PC, it's indistinguishable from running the games locally! Just crank up the resolution to full native, set it to 120hz, and max out the bitrate, and you'll have the best way to play competitive shooters like Fortnite on Linux.

Boot unlock themeing

Every theme can now include preview-unlock.png and unlock.png (transparent) to be listed under Style > Unlock, so they appear as options for a custom boot unlock design. You can also manually design your new unlock screen using omarchy-plymouth-preview and omarchy-plymouth-set — great for company logos!

New toggles

Direct boot (to skip limine preboot rollback screen) and temporary passwordless sudo (for letting agents change the system) has been added to the Trigger > Toggle menu. You can access it directly with Super + Ctrl + O.

Laptop mirroring

Mirroring your laptop screen for a projector can now be done from the hardware toggle menu under Trigger > Hardware or by hitting Ctrl + Super + Alt + Delete.

Helix themeing

When Helix is installed via Install > Editor > Helix, it'll be included in the automatic Omarchy themeing.

Cliamp: Music TUI

Cliamp is a beautiful TUI by Aether creator @bjarneo. It comes with three great radio stations for computer lovers out of the box, Lofi, Synthwave, and EDM. You can connect your Spotify account to it as well. Along with YouTube Music and other sources.

You can start it from the app launcher with Super + Space or directly with Super + Shift + Alt + M.

Ghui: GitHub TUI

ghui is a new TUI for managing your GitHub pull requests. It's installed on-demand with the first invocation of ghui on the terminal.

Command changes

As part of the unified Omarchy CLI, several omarchy-* scripts were renamed to fit the new namespacing. If you have personal scripts, hotkey bindings, or Waybar/Hypr configs calling the old names directly, update them to the new ones below. Configs shipped by Omarchy itself are migrated automatically.

The Dell XPS and ThinkPad mic-mute variants (omarchy-cmd-mic-mute-xps, omarchy-cmd-mic-mute-thinkpad) have been folded into the single omarchy-audio-input-mute, which now handles hardware LED syncing internally.

You can also reach all of these through the new unified CLI, e.g. omarchy capture screenshot, omarchy audio input mute, or omarchy system lock.

Feature presentations

Increased Panther Lake efficiency

Intel and Dell continue to refine our custom 6.19 kernel for Panther Lake with more backports from 7.0 and other improvements. We're now able to hit 2w idle on the new Framework 13 Pro with IPS panel and 2.2w idle using the Vantablack theme for the Dell XPS OLED 16". Incredible numbers that point to battery life in excess of 30 hours!! As always, real usage mileage is a lot lower than that, but still a huge leap forward.

Close the lid to disable laptop monitor (when you have external monitors connected)

If you're using your laptop with external monitors, you now just have to close the lid to turn off the internal laptop disable. When you open the lid again, it'll be enabled once more. If you have a closed lid, put the computer to sleep/hibernate/off, and then resume without the external monitor connected, we'll catch that too, and re-enable the internal display.

With Intel laptops, this now also works flawlessly with Thunderbolt connected external displays, like the Apple 5K Studio and 6K XDR options. (For the latter, though, you'll want to add monitor=DP-2,disable to your monitors.conf to disable the second ghost display that the XDR advertises for no good reason.)

You can also still toggle the laptop display on/off using Super + Ctrl + Del or Trigger > Hardware > Laptop Display.

No more automated /home snapshots or btrfs quotas

Omarchy uses Limine snapper to capture your system state before an update, so you're able to rollback, if a new package breaks your system. But we were also taking snapshots automatically of your /home directory, even if we never exposed a way to restore that automatically. That could take up a lot of space. Especially since the automated cleanup was broken for a while 🫣. Now we just snapshot /root to offer package rollback for the last five updates, and thus we also no longer need btrfs quotas, which had caused performance issues for some people.

You can of course still setup your own /home snapshots, if that's something you use.
