Timeline Visualizer Camera Lab 2

Camera Lab is an experimental Android build for comparing new zoom behavior before any production integration. It installs separately from Timeline Visualizer and updates Camera Lab 1 without affecting the production app.

What changed

Camera Lab 1 reduced camera panning during zoom-in. Testing showed that this could let the location marker drift too far from the center. Camera Lab 2 replaces that behavior with Travel slowdown during zoom-in.

• Zoom-in keeps the same quick camera timing.
• Higher values slow marker travel while the viewport zooms in.
• The camera continues following the marker within a tighter central zone.
• Saved travel time is redistributed across non-zooming sections, which preserves the selected video duration.
• Zoom-out does not trigger a slowdown.

The four experimental zoom styles remain Fixed zoom, Balanced zoom, Active zoom, and Close-up zoom.

What to test

Start with 0%, 30%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. Use the same Timeline file, period, duration, zoom style, and output format when comparing values. Check whether zoom-in stays quick, the marker remains comfortably framed, and the later compensation is smooth rather than feeling like a catch-up jump.

Record the selected percentage and approximate video timestamp if motion feels uncomfortable. Feedback about marker framing, travel speed, compensation, and preferred values is especially useful.

Installation and comparison

The package ID is dev.mahlernim.timelinevisualizer.cameralab. It can remain installed beside production dev.mahlernim.timelinevisualizer. Installing Camera Lab 2 updates Camera Lab 1 and retains its separate settings and app data. If installing it for the first time, select the Timeline file independently inside Camera Lab.

Privacy and limitations

Timeline processing remains on the device. CARTO receives requests for displayed map-tile areas under the same privacy model described by the project privacy policy. Do not upload or attach a private Timeline file when reporting feedback.

Camera Lab is not a production update and is not distributed through Google Play. The experimental terminology, Close-up preset, travel slowdown, and compensation algorithm may change or be removed after testing.

• Fixed zoom follows the route without changing scale.
• Balanced zoom uses gentle zoom changes and remains the default.
• Active zoom adjusts framing more actively across a journey.
• Close-up zoom stays closer to local travel and still widens for long transfers.
• Zoom-in movement reduction ranges from 0% to 100% in 5% steps. Higher values slow map-center movement more while zooming in. Zoom-out movement is unchanged.

Start with 0%, 30%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. Use the same Timeline file, period, duration, zoom style, and output format when comparing values. Record the selected percentage and approximate video timestamp if motion feels uncomfortable.

Installation and comparison

The package ID is dev.mahlernim.timelinevisualizer.cameralab. It can remain installed beside production dev.mahlernim.timelinevisualizer. Android keeps their settings and app data separate, so select the Timeline file independently in each app.

The launcher uses a blue Camera Lab icon with a LAB badge. The Settings screen also identifies the experimental build.

Timeline Visualizer 2.2.12

This update keeps the map fully visible across high-resolution portrait and landscape
videos. Tiles along the right side and lower edge are now prepared and rendered instead
of leaving grey areas in the exported video.

Timeline Visualizer 2.2.11

This update waits for video-rendering speed to stabilize before showing the estimated
remaining time. The estimate now uses recent rendering performance and stays hidden
during preparation, finishing, or unstable processing.

Timeline Visualizer 2.2.9

After the first successful Timeline JSON import, the app keeps a private preprocessed
copy so the remembered file opens much faster later. Selecting the file again refreshes
the copy. Missing, changed, or damaged cache data safely falls back to the original JSON.
Timeline data remains on the device.

Timeline Visualizer privacy prototype 2.1

This is an experimental side build for issue 66. It installs beside the production
app as Timeline Visualizer Privacy and does not change the main release version.

Prototype 2 preserves route continuity by replacing points inside each selected
privacy circle with one stable stand-in. Unlike the direct center-point proposal,
the stand-in is offset within the selected circle, so the exact selected center is
not placed in the preview or exported video.

This reduces visible precision but does not guarantee anonymity. Locations outside
selected circles remain precise. Flights remain unchanged. Review the full preview
and generated video before sharing.

Timeline Visualizer 2.2.6

The Video ready tray can now be dismissed with Done. Dismissing it clears the completed
export status so the tray does not return when the app restarts. The generated video
remains available in My videos.
